Here's why the Garden Route should be on your bucket list

High on the must-see lists of visitors to South Africa is the Garden Route. The Garden Route Tour stretches along the Indian ocean coastline for 350km, where ancient forests, verdant vegetation, freshwater lakes, estuaries, beautiful beaches, tall mountains, cascading waterfalls and stunning wildlife are part of the scenery. Bungee jump

The Bloukrans Bridge (the highest commercial bungee in the world, 218 meters). Blackwater Tubing, the unique aqua adventure, delivers heaps of fun, and is the ultimate way to explore the exquisite scenes of the Tsitsikamma forest.

Experience the longest over the Ocean Zipline in the world (1250 m). Situated in Mossel Bay over the beautiful Indian ocean.

Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour

Enjoy the unequalled beauty of the indigenous forest high up on treetop platforms. Gently glide along in a harness 35 meters above the forest floor. Many of the platforms are built around giant Outeniqua Yellowwood trees that are up to 900 years old! 

Take a guided tour through Monkeyland, here you will enjoy encounters with a variety of both indigenous and exotic primates.

Visit Tenikwa’s wildlife rehabilitation program, a unique nature experience offering wildlife tours. Stroll along the forest walk at the Birds of Eden, home to about 3,500 birds in a 65 m free flight dome (the largest in the world).

Take a ferry to the amazing Featherbed Nature Reserve, hop onto a 4×4 and venture into the reserve, then hike along the coast before enjoying a delicious lunch under the milkwood trees.

Enjoy a variety of water activities on Knysna Lagoon, some of which take you past the famous Knysna Heads out into the blue Indian Ocean.

Visit the Garden Route National Park, where you can hire a kayak and paddle to beautiful cascading waterfalls, and hike through ancient forests.   

Book a four day hike on the famous Otter Trail, one of the most pristine coastlines in the world. A sure thing for the passionate hiker.

There are plenty of choices when it comes to activities. The Garden Route is the ideal destination for the family, every day can be spent discovering something new in and around this incredible area.

The Cango Caves and Oudtshoorn

Oudtshoorn is located in the Karoo, which is a vast semi-arid land of unrivalled scenic beauty, making it a popular tourist destination on the famous Garden Route.

There are three good reasons to visit Oudtshoorn; 1. The stunning Cango Caves, which are one of Africa’s largest, deepest and longest, the site offers both a standard and adventure tour. 2. The Swartberg Mountain Pass is one of the highest, and finest gravel mountain passes in the world. 3. Oudtshoorn is home to the largest Ostrich population in the world. Creatures great and small

Mammal, reptile, fish and birdlife thrive in the region’s diverse ecosystems. In addition to elephant, baboon, gazelle and monkeys, you’ll see whales and dolphins along the coast, and the endemic Knysna seahorse in the Knysna estuary. Bird watching is special here, look out for the iconic Knysna Loerie. Don’t forget the little creatures, such as the charming dwarf chameleon. The Garden Route is a wildlife lovers paradise!

The Garden Route is situated along the warm Indian ocean, with beautiful seaside towns to explore. Enjoy aquatic activities like, deep sea fishing, diving, whale watching, great white shark cage diving, canoeing and surfing. There’s Knysna at the heart of the Garden Route with its vibey Waterfront, iconic Lagoon and yearly oyster festival. Plettenberg Bay with its stunning beaches, hikes and festive night life. The Wilderness with its relaxed village life, splendid beaches, organic markets and indigenous forests filled with birdlife. St Francis Bay, a quieter “hidden gem” with white-washed fisherman cottages, clear, warm rock pools and world class surfing. The possibilities are endless, and these towns only bring added enjoyment to this breath-taking stretch of coastline.
