Family Holidays & Safaris in South Africa

Going on a safari with children is a life-changing experience. The landscape is one huge outdoor classroom and safari guides will be one of the most inspiring teachers your kids ever have.

Children aged eight and up will gain the most from a safari holiday,  journeys can be long, and 5am games drive chilly. Bush walks may be limited to those over 12, so do check with your tour operator.

Safari Tours in Namibia and South Africa

Namibia Safari Tours and South African Safaris are our top choices, especially for young families with superb guides and customised “child friendly” lodges with swimming pools and entertainment rooms. South Africa and Namibia have the lowest risk of malaria in Africa (which means you skip the pre-travel doctors visit and the hassle of daily meds).

A growing number of safari lodges offer a dedicated children’s programme, and provide babysitting services if they are too young to join the adults on the game drives. Families with young children often choose to go to non-malarial areas such as the Eastern Cape, Pilanesberg, Waterberg, Addo Elephant NP and Madikwe game reserves. The Eastern Cape is particularly popular for family safaris, as it is the closest major safari area to Cape Town and the Garden Route, with its beautiful beaches, lagoons and forests.

Is it safe for Children?

Yes. All of the lodges take safety very seriously, particularly where children are involved. Always make sure you have a high SPF sun cream, sun hat and insect lotion to protect them against insect bites when out on game drives.

Families also opt for private guided tour or self-drive safari tours. South African national parks offer free entry to kids of 6 and under. A private guided and self – drive safari is perfect for kids, as you can be flexible to your own schedule. If your little one needs a wee, drive to a rest stop, and don’t forget to stock up on snacks so the family won’t be disturbed too much!
