11. The Thulamela Iron Age Site, in the north, is a stone walled habitat built around 520 years ago. Numerous artifacts have been unearthed on site, proofing that the society was part of a vigorous trade network controlled by Arab merchants.
12. Kruger is a malaria area, albeit during the winter months the risk is very low. It’s best to speak to your doctor about malaria prevention before your safari to a malaria region. The sure way to prevent infection includes covering up at night, wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants and applying repellent every few hours.
13. Kruger has 6 walking safari trails, from 1 day to multi day walks, spending nights in accommodation on the way. These trails are accompanied by armed rangers who will fascinate you with their knowledge on finds and sightings along the way. .
14. The park has 22 rest camps and 18 private safari lodges!
15. Established in 1896, the Kruger achieved national status in 1924. Colonel James Hamilton was appointed as 1st warden in 1902. Over the next 46 years he worked relentlessly in developing the park to the iconic wildlife wilderness it is today.
16. There is ample evidence that prehistoric man roamed the area 100 000 years ago. There are 265 known cultural heritage sites in the Kruger Park, including 140 San rock art sites.
17. Paul Kruger was the founder of the Kruger National Park and President of the Transvaal Republic. He played an active part in the Anglo Boer war.
18. The Kruger boasts 7 ecosystems, including riverine forest, baobab, sand forest, knob thorn-marula bushveld, woodland and acacia thicket, to name but a few.
19. The Kruger is home to more than half the world’s combined population of black and white rhino. Kruger Park has approximately 8000 of these captivating, beautiful and endangered creatures.
20. Kruger is home to about 45 snake species of which the black mamba, cobra and puff adder are deadly. Over a hundred kinds of reptiles are found here, including about 4 000 Nile crocodiles which reach lengths of 4 metres and can weigh up to 800 kg.
